Seven False Friends For English Speakers Learning German
Did you know that approximately 60% of English and German vocabulary is believed to be similar. This can be both a blessing and a curse for many learners. This means that plenty of the words you already know are closely related, though there are quite a few that look similar but have a completely different meaning. Ready to see some of them? You have already started, did you see it?
🔍 See — To See oder Lake
In English, a “see” is what you do with your eyes, but in German, “See” means lake. So, if you’re looking for a nice “See” to gaze upon, make sure you’re equipped with a swimsuit and not just a pair of binoculars. Also, if you are wondering, sea is das Meer in German 🏞️ 👀
🔍 Chef — Who’s the Boss?
You might think you’re talking about a culinary wizard when you say “Chef,” but in German, you’re actually referring to the boss. So, unless your boss is Gordon Ramsay, you might want to clarify who you’re talking about. Otherwise, you could end be in very confusing (or delicious?) situation. 🍳👨🍳 👩💼
🔍 Gift — The Deadly Surprise
In English, a “gift” is something you can’t wait to unwrap on your birthday. In German, however, “Gift” means poison. So, if a German friend offers you a “Gift,” it’s not the time to get excited… it’s time to run! 🎁 ☠️
🔍 Rat — Advice oder Rodent?
If someone in Germany offers you a “Rat,” don’t scream and jump on a chair. They’re not talking about a pesky rodent; they’re offering advice! And let’s face it, we could all use some good “Rat” now and then, right? 🐀 💬
🔍 Die — The oder Death
No need to panic! “Die” is simply the feminine article for “the.” So, when you see “die Frau,” it’s not a morbid statement, just a way to say “the woman.” ♀️ ⚰️
🔍 Pepperoni — Spicy Pepper oder Cured meat
watch out, pizza lovers! In Germany, “Peperoni” means spicy “chili peppers” and not the salami-like sausage you expect. 🍕 🌶️
🔍 Pickel — Pimple oder Pickled Food
You might want to eat a pickle but hold on. “Pickel” in German means pimple. Not exactly the kind of pickle you were hoping for.
